A tribute to Bruce Probyn

We, at the Principals Academy Trust, are mourning the loss of a truly incredible man.

Bruce was a prominent educator in Cape Town who built a reputation as a compassionate and charismatic leader who brought out the best in students and colleagues alike.

Witnessing Bruce in action was a masterclass in connecting with people and building an authentic rapport.

Bruce served as a remarkable principal for 27 years at several schools including Sea Point High School, Wynberg Boys, Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and Herschel Girls School. He was deeply respected and much-loved.

So many words have been used to describe Bruce’s very personal brand of inspirational leadership. He had time for everyone. He was kind, sincere, humble, wise and witty. His presence touched the lives of so many, and he made everyone feel so welcome. He was a people magnet.

Rather than stepping away from education on retirement, Bruce started a new chapter in late 2012. He co-founded the Principals Academy Trust with businessman, Rick Haw and fellow retired principal, Alan Clarke. He was passionate about mentoring and coaching public school principals in marginalised communities and worked for the organisation until his health prevented him from doing so earlier this year.

“Working with Bruce has been one of the highlights of my career” PAT Executive Director, Jeremy Gibbon.

Bruce shared a special working relationship and close friendship with Keith who passed away less than a month ago.

The treasured memories we share will remain with us forever.

Our thoughts are with all those who feel his loss acutely and especially his wife, Margie and children, Joe, Mike, Nicola and their families.

Remembering Keith Richardson

We are heartbroken.

Our beloved Keith Richardson, Head of Coaches at Principals Academy Trust passed away suddenly on Thursday, 17th September.

Keith brought wisdom, generosity and a deep commitment to education and enhancing school leadership in the Western Cape. He was a treasured colleague and friend who gave himself fully until the very end. He led, guided and coached with passion. He was the much-loved principal at Wynberg Boys High for 17 years and was involved on numerous school boards. He never said no to a opportunity to share his knowledge. At what was unknowingly, his final presentation, he received a standing ovation.

Keith gave so much to Principals Academy Trust for more than a decade, initially as CEO and more recently as Head of Coaches. He was greatly respected in the wider education community. We will sorely miss his warmth, his insight and his extraordinary life of service. We feel immense gratitude and affection for a remarkable man.

Our thoughts are with Keith’s wife, Pippa and his son, Toto and those who were close to him.

His legacy will live on forever.
